People of Sicily: The Endurance of the Everyday
This project has been in my mind for years. As a Sicilian who has lived abroad for almost two decades, the journey to develop this series was driven by a need to truly study and redefine the identity of my homeland—a vision extended by distance and sharpened by homecoming.
This is an essay on endurance—a meditation on how culture and character persist within the relentless rhythm of the Mediterranean sun. While Sicily is often presented as a stage of iconic ruins and vibrant chaos, The Endurance of the Everyday looks past the spectacle to find the quiet resilience beneath, focusing tightly on how Sicilianity defines people through everyday life and labor.
This collection guides the viewer from the island's familiar image to its most intimate, guarded spaces, using a visual language defined by the rhythmic tension between High-Contrast B&W (reflecting history, solitude, and the passing of time) and Vibrant Color (celebrating immediate vitality, commerce, and contemporary life).
Ultimately, these 21 images form a portrait of persistence: a testament to the resilience of a people defined by their deep connection to the land, their unrelenting spirit, and the simple, profound beauty found in the everyday effort.
The Journey Continues
What you've just seen is my intense, personal edit—the 21 images that, for me, best capture the fire of the Sicilian spirit.
This sequence is actually the beginning of something much larger. It's the core of a four-part photographic narrative that will feature over 100 images, diving deeper into the island’s culture, labor, legacy, and the simple moments of quiet solitude.
The full collection is currently being prepared for exhibition and monograph publication. Thank you for taking this journey with me, and stay tuned—the full story is still unfolding.
